Homemade Applesauce: Recipe #107

Maybe it’s because my mom used to make homemade applesauce for us when we were little, but I much prefer this to store-bought. Especially if our kids are willing to help peel and chop apples! This was a fun weekend project we did together, with delicious results.

This is part of our 1,000 Food Experiments to create sustainable meals for our family and hopefully yours.

Ingredients ($3.50 total)

2 lb bag pink lady apples (sweet and tart) – $2.99
2 tbsp butter or margarine, chopped up – $0.31
1/4 cup brown sugar – $0.13

Directions for Homemade Applesauce

1. Wash, peel, and chop the apples up into bite-sized pieces. Put in a greased 8×8″ baking dish, then top with the chopped up butter and sprinkle with brown sugar.

2. Cover with aluminum foil and bake at 400F for 45 minutes until apples are tender. Mash with a potato masher to your desired level of chunkiness. Enjoy warm or keep in the fridge for a sweet cool treat.

  1. Facebook comment! Becca says: Yup, you might want to try with no sugar and with the skins on. I just chop in 4ths and throw the whole apple in. Then I boil with a bit of water and and instant FLAVOR! I put in vitamix on 5 after finished. Just a thought! 🙂
